Arabic Calligraphy at its best

He is a non Arab, but so proficient in Arabic calligraphy that even the best Arab calligraphist will not hesitate to praise his work.

Khaleelullah chemnad, a young calligraphist and cartoonist from the South Indian state of Kerala, is an artist by instinct an inspiration. He has already held about 15 exhibitions in India and abroad and won accolades from several intellectuals and dignitaries, including those from the UAE and other GCC countries. Among the ten awards in his kitty received from various organizations, he cherishes the one from WHO which he won in 1992 and the Abu Dhabi based Muslim Writers Forum Award in 1994 the most.

Khaleel hails from a family which has great interest and talent in art and literature. Among his works he ranks the portrait of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sulthan Al Nahyan, whom he illustrated using only the Arabic alphabets of his name as his masterpiece in Arabic Calligraphy.

“I did not add any extra line or even a dot to complete the portrait of His Highness the president. Only the Arabic script of his name was written in calligraphic style to give the impression” He said.

Seeing the beauty and accuracy of his work, several people offered to publish or exhibit it, but he turned down all such offers “This is the tribute to the great leader of this nation. My intention is to present this to His Highness the President “, says khaleel.

“I am eagerly looking forward to that great day when my dream comes true” he added optimistically.

He add painted a similar Calligraphic portrait of Ajman Crown Prince His Highness Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi and presented in to Emiri Diwan. Currently he is busy painting the calligraphic portraits of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The 25-years- old Khaleel took to the calligraphy and literature as fish to water. Khaleel does not profess to belong to any particular school or dogma and his happy with his own style.

He started his career while in school. During his stay in Kerala he had worked for several local publications as a freelance cartoonist, calligraphist and journalist before coming to the UAE.

Khaleel is also well-versed in various modes of Islamic calligraphy which is as old as Islamic culture itself. He has depicted verses from the Holy Quran Illustrating their meaning in an attractive and understandable manner, drawing inspiration from his surroundings.

His depiction of the verse from Sura Al Nur of the Holy Quran: Allah is the light of Heaven and the Earth…” was greatly admired by the director of Kuwait’s Department of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Nadir Noori, and the former Saudi ambassador to India, Abdul Rahim Sayyid Ahmed, during an exhibition of his calligraphic works in Kerala. Sheikh Noori was presented the work on request.

His calligraphic works have also been displayed in the Sharjah Fine arts society’s exhibition during the Dubai Shopping Festival last year. The Kuala Lumpur based Islamic book trust included his works in a calligraphic exhibition at the Malaysian capital in 1988.

Khaleel has made his presence felt as a cartoonist too. His two cartoons on the danger posed by AIDS wont he first and third prize in a cartoon contest organized by the World Health Organisation in association with the University of Calicut in 1992. He has also won the Kerala Cartoon Academy Award, the biggest prize for a cartoonist in the state in 1989. His cartoons are still being published in various newspapers and magazines in Kerala.
